Henry Richardson [r.2.2.8.7]

Henry Richardson was the seventh child of William Richardson & Hannah Coar (nee Beaney) born March 18th, 1867 at Dawdon, Co Durham.

In 1871 Henry was with his parents at William St, Dawdon, Co Durham.  There were 4 brothers & 1 sister at home.  Henry’s father was tragically killed in the Seaham Colliery disaster of 1880.

In 1881 Henry & his widowed mother & 2 brothers & 2 sisters were still living at William St.

By 1891 Henry was still living with his mother but they had now moved to Howarth St South, Bishop Wearmouth.  The family had probably moved there as Henry & his brothers were all employed in jobs to do with ships & ship building – Henry was a metal founder, John was a marine engineer & George Robert was a stoker on a steam ship.

Henry married Sarah Hannah Unsworth in April-June 1899 at Sunderland.  Sarah was born April 16th, 1877 & christened May 9th, at Bishop Wearmouth, the daughter of Sarah Jane Wolstenholme & Thomas Unsworth, a joiner.

Henry & Sarah Hannah were living at 9 Earl St, Sunderland in 1901 with their 3 month old daughter Eleanor & a niece Alice J Unsworth (17), a laundry maid. Sadly daughter Eleanor died aged 8 months. Henry was a stoker on a steam ship.  Living next door at 8 Earl St was Henry’s brother Thomas & his family who was a ship’s engine driver.

Henry was not found in the 1911 census, presumably at sea, but his wife Sarah Hannah & their 4 children – George Robert (8), Thomas Henry (7), John (3) & Harold (1 month) were living at 15 Worcester Terrace, Sunderland.

It appears that the family moved to Fleetwood, Lancashire where 2 more children were born – Ruby Eileen in 1913 & William Beaney in 1915.

Sadly Sarah died at Fleetwood, aged just 38, & was buried on August 12th, 1915 at Fleetwood Cemetery, Lancs.

Henry married for the second time in Oct-December 1922 at Fleetwood, Lancashire. His second wife was Margaret Empson Fearn.  The 1930 register show widowed Margaret living at 30B Broomfield Rd, Fleetwood.

Henry, aged 72, died May 4th & was buried on May 8th, 1939 at Fleetwood Cemetery, Lancs.

The 1939 register shows son George Robert, a marine engine fitter, & his wife Ivy (nee Isabella Ivy Westby 1904-1954) who married in 1926 & son George Robert living at 12 Kenilworth Ave, Fleetwood.  Son John & his wife Margaret were living at 57 Oxford Rd, Fleetwood in 1939 & John was also a marine fitter.  Son Harold had moved south to Gloucestershire by 1939 & he & his wife Dorothy were living at 29 Durleigh Close, Bristol & Harold was an aircraft storekeeper.  Also listed at the same address was brother Thomas Henry, an aircraft ground engineer, & his wife Florence (nee Florence Stubbs 1909-2001), however Thomas’ name was crossed out.  In 1939 daughter Ruby was listed as house keeper at 67 Oxford Rd, Fleetwood , the head of the household being John Murphy, a hotel cook.

Son William was recorded as 3rd engineer on board the ship Maja sailing from Liverpool to New York in 1943 & 1944.

Margaret Empson Richardson died June 16th, 1954 aged 73 & was buried alongside Henry & Sarah Hannah.
